Beagles are energetic, playful, affectionate dogs and known for baying loudly. They enjoy companionship from both humans and other dogs. They love to feel like “part of the group,” and need plenty amount of attention and playtime. Beagles are notoriously friendly, bursting with energy and stamina that can be a great source of fun and activity. They can also be headstrong and sometimes stubborn and require patient, creative training techniques. Characteristics more than balanced out by their hound nature, which is curious, determined, and focused on food.

It’s difficult to resist the charm of a Beagle’s dark brown or hazel eyes, with his soft, pleading expression. Sometimes they look like small Foxhounds because of the solid, sturdy and muscular body. This breed has a small, rounded skull with a square muzzle and wide nostrils. Their ears are long and droopy. Beagles are superb hunters, known to be “Great trackers” because they are originally bred as a scent hound to track small game, mostly rabbits and hare.

If you like dogs that talk, you’ll love Beagles! They prefer company, instead of intelligible language, however, their sounds consist of “baying,” which is a kind of ear-splitting, hollow bubbling howl. You’ll just have to get used to it.

Did you know the famous cartoon Snoopy is a Beagle? Yes, Snoopy is a Beagle!

The “Peanuts” character Snoopy is arguably the most famous fictitious Beagle. Beagles are very intelligent just like Snoopy.

Another fact is that “Beagle” means “Loudmouth” in French.

Beagles are known for being very vocal, with barking, baying and howling. According to Paw Nation:

“In fact, it is believed the name ‘Beagle’ comes the Middle French ‘bee gueule,’ literally ‘wide throat,’ but more poetically translated as ‘loudmouth.'”

Beagles are loving, gentle, and friendly dogs with an independent streak and an intelligent nature. Next time considering which breed to choose, consider getting a Beagle and you’ll surely won’t regret it!
